The 4th of September 2016 took place the first international sportive challenge for people with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type of obstructive lung disease characterized by long-term poor airflow. This unknown to the public’s disease affects several millions of people around the world.
The cycling challenge took place in Hyères (83) and was attended by 600 people. Many leading scientists have given their support, as well as the winner of the Tour de France Lucien Aimar. 340 runners, including 15 people with deficient respiratory, took up the challenge on several possible routes including one of 46 km, specially drawn to be accessible to the greatest number.
The event created a real leverage effect at the European level to encourage adapted physical activity for persons with chronic illnesses to have a better quality of life.
